Google Shopping management: how product ads work and where to start
Google Shopping shows product cards in search results with an image, title, price and store name, so shoppers can compare offers from several stores before they click. For an online store it is often one of the most profitable channels, because a click usually signals genuine buying intent. As a Google Shopping agency, we run it as three connected parts: product data (the feed in Merchant Center), advertising campaigns in Google Ads, and tracking.
The feed and Merchant Center come first
Google can only show what is in your feed. If the price on your site differs from the price in the feed, the product is disapproved. If the title is just a SKU, with no brand, product type and key attribute, Google does not know which searches to match it with. So we start with a Merchant Center audit: we fix disapproved products, assign precise Google product categories, add identifiers and rewrite titles around real shopper queries. This feed optimisation often lifts performance before any budget changes.
Campaign structure and bidding
One campaign for the whole catalogue is almost always worse than a segmented structure. We group products by category, margin and popularity using custom labels, set separate bids and target ROAS, and steer queries with priorities and negative keywords. Once the account has enough conversion data we add Performance Max, which extends delivery to YouTube, Gmail and other Google channels.
Titles that match how people search
The first words of a title carry the most weight in the listing, so we put the brand, product type and key attributes (size, colour, material, model) at the front and remove promotional phrases and capital letters. Instead of “PEG41-BLK-43”, a title should read like “Nike Pegasus 41 Men’s Road Running Shoes, Black, Size 43” (an illustrative example). Small changes like this often decide whether a product appears for a high-intent search or not at all.
Free listings and paid ads
Products in a valid feed can also appear in the free listings on the Shopping tab, while paid campaigns add visibility on top. Because both depend on the same data, clean feed work pays off twice. It also gives you a solid base for every other Google channel you may add later.
Tracking and reporting
Without correct purchase tracking, Shopping runs blind. We connect GA4 and Tag Manager, pass conversion values and report spend, revenue and ROAS each month, not only for the account but by category and product. You see which items pay back and which should be paused.
What Google Shopping management costs
For one-off setup we have used a guideline of around $50 per product category and from $100 for individual products. The cost of ongoing management depends on the number of products, the state of the feed, the campaign types and the amount of reporting, so we quote it after a short audit. The ad budget is paid separately to Google.
Where Shopping fits in your strategy
Product ads work best alongside other channels. Search and remarketing are covered under our e-commerce PPC services, the wider Google Ads picture is on our PPC services page, and long-term growth in free traffic comes from e-commerce SEO.
